Edward J. Getz
B&O Railroad retiree; World War II veteran; enjoyed gardening, fishing
Edward J. Getz, 90, died Dec. 30, 2013.
Born in Schaffer, W. Va., Mr. Getz lived in Tallmadge for most of his life. He started as a water boy for the B&O Railroad when he was 17 and retired as general road foreman after 44 years of service. He was in the second wave of the invasion that landed on Iwo Jima with the Marines during World War II and was among the first troops deployed for the occupation of Japan.
An avid fisherman, Mr. Getz enjoyed gardening and Lake Erie walleye.
Preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Alfred Getz; sisters, Margaret McClellen and Vera Franzman; grandson, Andrew Amicarelli, he is survived by his wife, Lyvonne Getz; sister, Mary Ellen Reed of Hawaii; children, Carolyn Wilkens, Dianna (Ron) Phillips, Alfred (Sue) Getz, and Bonita (Ken) Powers; grandchildren, Amy (Jim) McConihe, Marie Lavender, Elizabeth (Pat) Erwin, Cynthia Phillips, Mike (Robin) Phillips, Steve Amicarelli, Sara Getz and Susie Getz; great-grandchildren, Nick McMillen, Erin Erwin, Kyle Erwin, Hanna and Ethan McConihe, Dex Phillips and Travis Amicarelli.
Donovan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
