Built computers used for Apollo missions, enjoyed travel, grandmother
Sharon Ickes, 72, died in her sleep June 5, 2014, at her residence in Tallmadge.
Mrs. Ickes was born in Akron in 1942 to parents, Charles and Edna Knupp. She spent most of her early life in Southern California before marrying Harold Ickes and returning to the Akron area. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and VFW, participating at the state-level of the latter. Early in her career, she helped to build the computers that were central to the early Apollo missions and later worked at Goodyear Aerospace in Akron. She was a member of Pogo and loved to travel.
Mrs. Ickes is survived by her husband, Harold; two sons, Dean Knupp and Harold Ickes II; and three grandchildren, Alex Knupp, Karalyn Knupp and Avery Fierman-Ickes (to be born September 2014).
Mrs. Ickes requested no service, preferring instead to have a private gathering of close family.
