Tallmadge resident Jacob McWhirter and the Victory Racing Team went west to the Norway, Illinois track for the fourth race of the World Karting Associations Great Lakes Sprint Series regional.
Racing began with Jake putting the Comet-powered Polymer Valley Chemicals Yamaha Junior Lite Tony Kart onto the outside of the fourth row in P8 and the Comet Powered MMP/XS Energy Drink Komet Junior Heavy onto the outside of the third row in P6.
In the prefinals, McWhirter lost one spot in Yamaha but held his position in Komet.
In the finals, McWhirter lost one spot in Yamaha, while on track, contact early in the Komet race forced him to drop back two more spots to finish the day in ninth and eighth place, respectively.
While finishing the day with two top 10s, the team and driver were not satisfied with the handling of the kart.
After a long evening, the karts took to the track with completely different setups the following day.
Qualifying in the Polymer Valley Chemicals Yamaha Junior Heavy resulted in the inside of row three in P5.
In the MMP/XS Energy Drink Komet Junior Lite, McWhirter missed out on the pole position by .002 and had to settle for the outside of row one.
In the Yamaha prefinal, McWhirter lost one spot. In Komet, he lost five spots due to a drivetrain issue with the chain and sprocket. The finals found McWhirter maintaining his position in Yamaha to finish in sixth and despite a first turn melee, he picked up a spot in Komet to also finish sixth.
