Blue Devils finish 0-2 at Brad Bauer Duals

Tallmadge head wrestling coach Jason Shaw had a strategy heading into the Brad Bauer Memorial Duals Dec. 8 at Ravenna.

"It was basically a chance to get our younger guys in on the mat," he said. "We also wanted to let some of our guys who didn't wrestle [at the Paulie McGhee Invitational] out there.

"That was our mindset. Because of that, it's not as true a result as what it could have been. From 138 down, it was pretty much all new guys."

The Blue Devils also gave up forfeits at 106 and 120 pounds. Thus, the scores ended up a bit lopsided.

Tallmadge dropped a 58-15 loss to the host Ravens and also fell to Norton 54-10.

Thus, Tallmadge's dual-meet record stood at 0-2 as of press time.

"I was happy with the Ravenna match," Shaw said. "The effort was there. I wasn't really happy with Norton.

"There were too many pins against Norton. Overall, though, that's what I pretty much was expecting."

Against Ravenna, the Blue Devils managed three individual wins, all of which came in the upperweights.

At 182 pounds, sophomore Jacob Mertus squeezed out a 9-8 win over Ravenna's Gavin Reaser.

Sophomore 195-pounder Travis Durago pinned the Ravens' AJ Richmond in 5 minutes, 25 seconds.

At 220 pounds, senior Jake Wiegand scored a pin in 1:04 over Jonathan Kato.

Shaw said he was very happy with the three wins, especially the win by Mertus.

"He was wrestling up a weight class and he just kept coming at him," Shaw said. "These guys hadn't wrestled a lot prior to this meet."

Against Norton, Tallmadge got wins from three other wrestlers.

Freshman Alex McGraw picked up a close 4-3 decision over Norton's Noah Zupancic at 113 pounds.

At 152 pounds, freshman Justin Paonessa scored a 10-1 major decision win over Michael Fox.

Senior 170-pounder Troy Stricker scored a tight 8-6 win over Norton's Michael Dyer.

The Blue Devils were set to open their Suburban League schedule with home dual meets with Green and Copley Dec. 13.

On Dec. 15, Tallmadge was set to compete in the Canfield Duals. Results of those matches were not available at press time.

The Blue Devils are set to participate in a double dual at Nordonia with Wadsworth Dec. 20. First match is set for 6 p.m.
