The Tallmadge boys basketball team fell to 4-12 on the season and 2-8 in the Suburban League after losing a 59-54 decision to Highland Feb. 1 in Medina.

The Hornets (10-7, 6-4) led by as many as 13 (22-9) before the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run. Highland built its advantage back up to 11 (27-16), but Tallmadge responded with a 12-2 spurt.

The Blue Devils also had a 9-0 run that started late in the third quarter and continued in the fourth period. That final flurry cut the Hornets' lead to 46-45 with a little more than five minutes left.

In the end, Highland point guard Tanner Houska was just too much for Tallmadge.

He finished with a game-high 25 points and was 12-of-14 from the foul line. Houska made four consecutive free throws after the Blue Devils got within one. And then he delivered the dagger when he took a few dribbles, made a spin move and threw up a left-handed floater to give the Hornets a 54-49 advantage with 2 minutes, 53 seconds left.

Anthony Gotto led Tallmadge with 19 points and Damon Gidley and Andrew Francesconi added nine and eight points, respectively, for the Blue Devils.

Brennan Scott had 12 points for Highland and Austin Casenhiser finished with 10 points for the Hornets.

Highland earned a 54-43 win in the junior varsity contest.
