It's a good bet the Tallmadge girls golf team will go wherever senior Kelsey Rice and junior Taylor Spataro takes it.
"Kelsey Rice and Taylor Spataro will anchor the team," Lady Blue Devils' third-year coach Emily Harrington said.
Last year, Tallmadge finished 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the Suburban League. The Lady Blue Devils also finished 10th during Division I sectional play.
Rice was the team's lone Tallmadge player to advance to district play. Spataro was named the team's most improved player in 2012.
The rest of the team features newcomers to the varsity team.
Seniors Kirsten Lightel and Brandy Wakefield and sophomore Ally Henry played on the junior varsity squad.
Junior Kayla Canterberry, a first-year player, also expects to contribute.
The Lady Blue Devils lost three seniors from a year ago. They are Lindsey Swan, Lauren Charlillo and Natalie Beckwith.
"We lost some key players that scored a lot for us last year," Harrington said. "We're counting on our former JV girls to step up and score at the varsity level."
Harrington's assistant is Matt Hagedorn, who enters his third season with the team. Harrington would be happy if her team finished third in the Suburban League.
"Highland and Green will dominate the league, but we should compete well with Wadsworth, Copley, Revere, Nordonia and Cloverleaf," she said.
Tallmadge was scheduled to host Aurora Aug. 8 at Brookledge Golf Course in Cuyahoga Falls. The Lady Blue Devils are set to bisit Kent Roosevelt Aug. 10 at the Fairways at Twin Lakes in Kent. Results of those matches were not available at press time.
Tallmadge is scheduled to play at Suburban Pre-Season Aug. 12 at Barberton Brookside Country Club. Play is set to begin at 8 a.m.
The Lady Blue Devils are scheduled to host Cuyahoga Falls and Kent Roosevelt Aug. 14.
