The host Tallmadge tennis team lost a 3-2 decision to Massillon Aug. 15 in its season debut.
Senior Brianna Wise earned her first varsity victory after posting a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles and the first doubles team of senior twins Lauren Cyphert and Madison Cyphert cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Lady Blue Devils finished 4-11 in 2012, including a 1-7 mark in the Suburban League.
Tallmadge lost four seniors to graduation. They are seniors Sam McNulty, Amelia Rawland, Dominique McGraw and Kylie Sargeant.
The Cyphert twins are the lone returning players this year. They played singles last year.
"The Cypherts won the Suburban League title as freshmen," said Tallmadge head coach Russell Wormald, who has been a part of the girls and boys teams for more than 20 years. "They enjoy playing doubles."
Other players in the mix are seniors Tiffany Eisemon, Rebeccah DiPuccio and Emily Marcu; sophomores Allison Evans, Alyssa Brown and twin sister Ashleigh Brown; and freshman Brittani Frick. Wormald's assistant is Mike Conley.
Wormald isn't sure how the Suburban League race will turn out.
"Green lost its No. 1 to injury and Wadsworth is vastly improved," he said. "Copley's No. 1 last year is No. 2 this year. They have an extremely talented girl who played doubles last year going to No. 1. That makes them formidable.
"Highland is extremely strong in both boys and girls and Revere always has players. I don't see a clear favorite."
Nevertheless, Wormald will be more than happy to take his chance with his talented pair of twins any time they take the court.
"The Cypherts have the ability to play with almost anyone," he said.
The Lady Blue Devils were scheduled to compete at the Orrville Invitational Aug. 17. Results were not available at press time.
Tallmadge is set to host Revere Aug. 19 and Canton South Aug. 20 before heading to Copley Aug. 21. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
