Tallmadge girls hoops team advances to regional play

The Tallmadge girls basketball team is heading to Division II regional play for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

The second-seeded Lady Blue Devils earned a convincing 53-39 victory over Norton in a Division II district title contest Feb. 28 at Lake High School in Uniontown.

With the win, Tallmadge (17-8) advanced to regional play in Ontario. The game is scheduled to take place March 4 at 7 p.m.

The Lady Blue Devils led from start to finish. They jumped out to a 12-4 lead after one quarter.

But the Lady Panthers cut their deficit to two (24-22) early in the third quarter.

Nevertheless, Tallmadge responded with a 9-2 run and took command in the fourth quartrer. The Lady Blue Devils outscored Norton 20-13 in the final eight minutes.

Joanna Catalano led Tallmadge with 12 points. Mary Ryan and Kirsten Lightel added 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Kelsey Rice and Olivia Ayres each had nine points for the Lady Blue Devils.

Rice also had nine rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Brooke Robinson led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 16 points.
