Despite big comeback, Tallmadge boys hoops team's season ends

The fifth-seeded Tallmadge boys basketball team lost a 57-49 decision to top-seeded Cleveland Central Catholic March 5.

The Division II district semifinal contest took place at Stow-Munroe Falls High School's James G. Tyree Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Blue Devils finished 14-10. It was their first trip to district play since the 2008-09 season.

The Ironmen (17-6) jumped out to a 20-5 lead late in the first quarter, but Tallmadge scratched and clawed its way back into the game.

When Joseph Vassalotti made a layup off a nice feed from Justin Cambria, CCC's lead was just three (52-49) with less than 50 seconds left.

But Tallmadge got no closer despite the Ironmen's woes at the free throw line.

All told, CCC made just 11 of 28 foul shots. The Blue Devils weren't much better. They made just 1 of 5.

The Ironmen forced a turnover and sealed the deal at the line in the final seconds.

Tervell Beck led CCC with a game-high 19 points and Desmond Crosby had 13 points for the Ironmen.

Also reaching double figures in scoring for CCC were Antwon Lillard (11) and Montel McRae (10).

Nate Bickar led Tallmadge with 17 points and made five 3-pointers.

Andrew Francesconi added 12 points and Colten Stricker and Joseph Vassalotti scored 11 and eight points, respectively.
