Nordonia holds off Tallmadge baseball team in 12 innings

The host Tallmadge baseball team fell to 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the Suburban League after losing a 7-3 decision to Nordonia in 12 innings April 23 at Dave Young Field.

With the win, the Knights improved to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Cather Kevin Chonko hit a one-out grand slam to left field in the top of the 12th to give Nordonia a 7-3 lead.

Nordonia got a diving catch from right fielder Alex Alders and then turned a game-ending double play in the bottom of the 12th.

Right-hander Logan Strauss, who entered the game in the seventh inning, got the victory on the mound. He did not allow a run in five innings of work.

Blue Devils' right-hander William Woods, who entered the game with one out in the sixth, took the loss.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

Designated hitter Kevin Ross led off with a walk and left fielder David Murray and second baseman Robbie Buck followed with singles to load the bases.

Strauss did not have to take the bat off his shoulders to drive in the game's first run as he drew a free pass from starting right-hander Tristan Clark.

Tallmadge took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Catcher Matt Noel tied the game with a run-scoring double and the Blue Devils got the tying run when a pickoff attempt went wide of first base.

Nordonia tied the game in the fourth when Murray led off with a single, went to third on a double by Buck and came home on a ground out by Strauss.

Nick Nolan, who started on the mound, gave the Knights a 3-2 lead with a solo home run to left field.

Nordonia finished with 11 hits and six errors. The Knights also left 18 runners on base.

Tallmadge had nine hits and one error. The Blue Devils stranded 13 runners.
