Green holds off Tallmadge baseball

The Tallmadge baseball team fell to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in the Suburban League after losing a 3-2 decision to Green May 7 at Dave Young Field.

Left-hander Brandon Papp went the distance on the mound to get the win.

Right-hander William Woods, who pitched the first four innings, took the loss.

The Bulldogs (10-12, 6-6) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

Conner Coombs, who bats ninth in the order, led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a single by Papp.

Coombs scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left by Kevin Nowacki.

Calvin Kortze drove in the second run on a ground ball to the shortstop. Papp slid under the tag on the throw home.

The Blue Devils made it 2-1 in the bottom of the third on a two-out, run-scoring single to center by leadoff batter Conor McVey.

Tallmadge had runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth, but a failed squeeze play and Papp's clutch pitching got Green out of the jam.

The Bulldogs got their third run when DarShawn Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the sixth.

Matt Noel added a run-scoring single for the Blue Devils in the bottom of the sixth.

Green had nine hits and no errors, while Tallmadge had eight hits and one error.
