Tallmadge softball team wins thriller against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy


The Tallmadge softball team is heading to Division II district play.

The host Lady Blue Devils advanced after posting a 1-0 victory in nine innings over Cuyhahoga Valley Christian Academy.

Senior right-hander Kirsten Lightel got the win in the circle. She finished with 19 strikeouts and allowed just three hits. She walked one batter.

Tallmadge scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to left field in foul territory by Brandy Wakefield.

Joanna Catalano, who started the inning with a bloop single to left and then moved to third on a double off the fence in right-center by Tori Young, scored.

Young's double was the lone hit for the Lady Blue Devils with runners on base. Tallmadge finished 1 of 15 with runners on base.

Right-hander Katelyn Justice took the loss despite pitching all nine innings.

The Lady Blue Devils had five hits and no errors. The Lady Royals (7-16), who got two dazzling diving catches by center fielder Lauren Hughes, had one error.
