BMX racers from around the state competed in the Ohio state championship finals Sept. 11 at Akron BMX.
Throughout the season, riders earned points at 10 state qualifying races at tracks around the state for a chance at earning their state rank.\ After they earned their state rankings, they competed in their class at the finals.
The quarter-mile BMX track at Akron, which has been in operation since 1981, features high banked turns and big dirt jumps with a special surface coating that helps riders maintain a fast speed in all conditions.
Among the hundreds of contenders in the finals, three Tallmadge residents earned first-place victories in their class. They are Joey Griffith in the age 6 novice class, Justin King in the age 11 novice class and Thom Thorne in the age 32-to-35 cruiser class.
Kai Gray, a Tallmadge resident, earned her state ranking in the age 4 novice division. She placed third overall.
