Girls track rolls past Barberton

Sara Johnson had quite a day as the Tallmadge girls track and field team defeated host Barberton 87-41 April 18 in a Suburban League American Conference meet.

Johnson, a junior, won the 100-meter run with a time of 12.7 seconds, which was her fastest time this season and tied a personal best. Senior Alexis Malish finished second (13.1).

Johnson won the 800 with a time of 2:40. Chloe Heestand placed second (2:53) and Claire Cate took third (2:54).

Johnson also won the long jump with a season-best leap of 17 feet, 3 inches. Freshman Jill Catalano and senior Hannah Salter tied for second (14-5).

Johnson, Catalano and Malish joined junior Maddie Tasich to win the 400 relay, clocking in with a season-best time of 51 seconds.

"Sara had a huge meet," Lady Blue Devils head coach Mike Srodawa said. "It was her first time in the 800. I was very satisfied with our overall performance."

On April 13, Tallmadge finished third out of eight teams at the Aurora Greenmen Invitational at Veterans Stadium.

In the win over Barberton, Tasich won the 200 with a time of 28.2. Malish placed second (29.3).

"It was Maddie's first time in the 200 this year, so I was very happy with her performance," Srodawa said.

Malish, Tasich and Catalano joined Karaniah Rolli to win the 800 relay with a time of 1:54.1.

Freshman Kenna Loveless won both the 3,200 with a time of 13:17 and the 1,600 with a time of 5:48. Ashleigh Hughes took second in the 3,200 (14:47) and third in the 1,600 (6:30).

Winning the high jump was senior Vanessa Lane with a leap of 5 feet. Amela Masic and junior Evelyn Passarelli tied for third (4-4).

"Vanessa has been solid in that event all season," Srodawa said.

Lane finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.2. Passarelli took third (19.4).

Tasich was runner-up in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51 seconds. Lane took third (55.2).

Rolli finished second in the 400, clocking in at 1:09.6. Passarelli placed third (1:11).

At the Aurora meet, the Lady Blue Devils scored 92 points. Highland won the competition with 128 points and Aurora took second with 108 points.

"The girls performed well," Srodawa said. "We were in second place all the way until the second to last event. It was a good meet for us."

Senior Brittney Harris won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.38.

"Brittney has won that event before in this meet, so it was nice to see that she's back to where she was two years ago," Srodawa said.

Freshman Ravyn Edge captured the 1,600 with a time of 5:38.79 and Johnson won the long jump with a leap of 16-1.

Tasich, Malish, Johnson and Harris combined to finish second in the 400 relay with a time of 51.86.

Lane was runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

Tasich placed third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.09. Lane took fourth (52.35).

Finishing third in the 100 was Johnson with a time of 13.06.

Edge placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:30.68, and Loveless captured third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:42.73.

In the 200, Johnson placed fourth, clocking in at 27.05. Also finishing fourth was Catalano in the long jump with a leap of 14-10.

Harris, Malish, Rolli and Tasich placed fourth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:57.68.

In the 1,600 relay, Rolli, Edge, Catalano and Passarelli combined to finish fourth with a time of 4:31.87.

Cate, Heestand and Hughes joined freshman Morgan Moses to place fifth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:52.15.

Tallmadge was scheduled to take a 2-1 overall record and 2-1 American Conference mark into a home meet April 20 against conference rival Highland. Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Blue Devils are scheduled to host conference foe Revere April 25 at 4 p.m. On April 28, they are set to compete in the Buckeye Relays at Buckeye High School in Medina at 3:30 p.m.
